The Best Ever Baked Beans

Even ‘non-cookers’ will love this recipe for Baked Beans…

1.  Wash and sort 1 pound (2 1/2 cups) white beans. Soak overnight in    lots of water OR boil 5 minutes and allow to soak in the water for  an hour. Drain and discard cooking/soaking water. (This is supposed to prevent “‘gas!”)

2.  Mix beans in large cooking pan with-

1/2 cup chopped bacon

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon salt (I use a little less)

1/2 cup chili sauce OR salsa

1 large chopped onion

1/2 cup molasses

1-2 tablespoons prepared mustard

And enough water to cover the soaked beans. Bring to a boil. Put bean mixture in large casserole (OR crock pot). Add enough water to cover.

Bake, covered, in a slow oven (275F) for at least 6 hours OR on on low in crockpot for 6-7 hours. Add hot water as needed to keep beans moist.

This makes a big batch. Freeze any extras in serving size containers.

  1. Sounds very much like the recipe I have used for years Brenda. I always put a pinch or two of dry mustard in it, which was to stop the gas. My hubby used to tell me I was taking all the fun out of having beans.

  2. Thanks for this, Brenda. I’ve been looking for a good baked beans recipe for a long time. There would have been a time I would have just asked my mom, but that option isn’t there for me anymore. We’re eating a lot healthier now – more beans and whole grains – and this will fit in perfectly… I’ll let you know how they turn out! Now, would you like my recipe for pickled beets? It’s a prizewinner!

  3. Hi Brenda

This recipe sounds great, and easy.
I will try it when my family is coming for a visit and we are having a “mixed bag” for a meal.

  4. Hi Brenda,
Thanks for the bean recipe. Being a diabetic, I substituted a little honey for the sugar and crushed tomaoes for the malasses. I cooked them in my crockpot, (slow cooker), so able to leave it for hours. They were absolutely yummy. A great win for me, with plenty in freezer for weeks to come.
