Four Hundred Years of Beloved

Every so often you want to own a book just because it is so beautiful. The Treasure of God’s Word, Celebrating 400 years of the King James Bible (Jack Countryman) is this years’ choice. The deep reddish brown leather (?) cover with gold lettering is a gem.

The ‘aged’ pages in coordinating style are soothing to look at and to read.

Now for the content. This book tells the origin of the King James Version in short snippets that intertwine with favourite readings from the original text.

Those verses are titled not by location but by content. That is, they are titled as God’s Love, God’s Faithfulness or God’s Comfort and so on.

The history covers things like the Profound Influence of the King James Bible.

Did you know that without this particular version, there would have been no Paradise Lost, Pilgrim’s Progress, Handel’s Messiah or Gettysburg Address?

Now of course we have many Bible versions, each with their own merits.

But the King James was actually the first version available and readable by the every day person. Until 1611, they had to depend on clergy information. Now? those who wanted could finally read the Word in common everyday language .

This book is an ideal gift for a King James advocate but more importantly, it reminds us that God’s Word should be available to everyone, in their own everyday language.

Calling all Abusers!

I’ve been a little remiss here..blogging by the wayside so to speak. I am knee deep, well it’s about waist deep right now…in my new book.

Meeting Myself is a memoir of my life as a bulimic, recovering and otherwise. This means pawing through tons of mind garbage that I’d prefer not to revisit.

When I am not writing it, I am thinking it. YUCK. Do abusers ever care that they leave a shattered person behind them? I doubt it. If they did they would

never abuse.

I am calling all abusers to cease and desist.

We the abused are giving fair notice. We will NOT take it any more. We are declaring our minds to be God’s property. We are declaring our bodies as His.

Touch us at your peril!!!The Bible speaks about you..oh yes it does…in Matthew chapter 18

6But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

7“Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come! 8If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Lord give us, the abused children of Your world, your grace and your healing and Your peace. Grant a sensible mind to those who abuse so that they might be willing to walk  a new life that  no longer includes abuse of the powerless.

Choose Life— On Blogtalk Radio

I had the opportunity to participate on the Prayables Blogtalk Radio program today. I read my prayer–Choose Life and shared how Ron’s illness brought me to that place.

I was thankful to appear on air with so many wise people. You can find Rabbi Yossi at his web site-  http:revealingthesoul.com. Prayables.com is well worth the read. Sign on for your daily prayer. It will show up on your screen first thing every day.

You can tune in and hear it by clicking on the site below…

Ok, apparently a number of blogs have missed the nomination period. That’s a shame, mostly because that means we all missed out on learning about them. So, we’re giving you one last chance to nominate 1 blog for each category.

Nominate a blog in the comments section, and specify the category for which it is nominated. The blog with the most nominations for each category will be added to Round 2 of voting, and will skip Round 1.

I realize that this seems unfair to the winners of Round 1, but remember two things:

(1) this is for fun, and to learn about new blogs; and
(2) if they wouldn’t have gotten many votes in Round 1, they won’t get many votes in Round 2.

Voting for this add-on ends along with Round 1 on October 17th at 12:00 noon.

Cheers, and Good Luck!

May I Minister to your Pastry?

Stop avoiding the issue. Stop looking for miracle recipes. Pie pastry is not beyond you. Just like life, it is mostly a matter of how you handle it…

So let’s get started.

As soon as I got my first food processor( I’m on my fourth!) I figured out how to make pie pastry in it. You can do it by hand. It just takes longer.

Basic Recipe-Food Processor Pastry

This recipe makes enough for a double crust pie or two or three singles.

2 cups all purpose flour

2/3 cup lard (yes I know!- the pig doesn’t like it either!)

a pinch of salt

1/4 cup ice water

Place flour, salt and shortening in food processor. Process only until mix forms course crumbs. Add the water. Mix only until a ball of dough forms around the blade.

Remove and press by hand into two balls.

Lightly flour your roll-out-pie pastry area. Roll first dough ball into desired size. Place in pan and trim edge.

DO NOT add  these leftover bits to the other ball of pastry. Roll the second ball of dough out on its own.

When all you have left are little bits? THEN you may mix them together and roll them out for a smaller pie, or tarts.

Hints

1. It is the mixing of leftovers with new pastry that makes tough chewing.

2. Lightly grease the bottom of the pie pan. This helps cook the bottom crust.

3. Eat with a clear conscience. It’s not like you are making pie every day!
